As one would expect, clinical chemistry is encroaching more and more into the fields of medicine and surgery. This has enormously in- creased the load on the hospital clinical chemistry laboratory and called for automatic procedures required to handle it. At the same time greater attention has been given to quality control, so necessary to maintain the high standard of biochemical data required for the care of patients. This volume deals with important aspects of both automatic procedures and quality control. As always, in addition to the technical aspects of the discipline, the Editors have carefully chosen their contributors so as to provide up-to-date information related to the biochemical etiology of disease, as well as to the control of therapy.
