What is istikhara?

The meaning of Istikhara is: asking for good, that is: praying to Allah for good and goodness in your futures matters, the main thing after Istikhara is the tendency of the heart, it is not necessary to see a dream, towards which the heart is inclined should be understood well. The truth of Istikhara is that Istikhara is a dua with the purpose of asking help from Allah, that is, through Istikhara, a person prays to God Almighty that whatever I do, will be good or bad for me and to prevent bad things in the coming future. Istikhara can be performed by others as well; But it is better to do istikha yourself. This is because the method, which is proven from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), mentions doing istikhara by himself.

The literal meaning of Istikhara is: Asking for help and its Shariah meaning is: A matter in which both aspects are possible i.e you can either adopt or reject it, but you have doubt about the ultimate result whether to start or reject a job etc. You have or are reluctant to give up, You are indecisive, in the light of your intellect you cannot decide whether to do or not to do, And your heart is also inclined towards, you can't even shake this thought out of your mind, as if the situation is choosing between Yes or No. So both in terms asking Allah for guidance about what is best in the matter.

For the work which is ordered in the Sharia, istikhara is not done. Istikhara is not done even about past affairs if someone comes and tells you: "You have been bewitched or bound and now it will be broken." Istikhara is also forbidden for doing what is forbidden by Sharia, and it is a great audacity on Allah Ta'ala and is like inviting Allah's wrath. Istikhara is allowed only in permissible matters: whether or not to accept a marraige proposal, whether or not to enter into a business partnership with a person, you receive a job offer from more than one place, you hesitate in choose the one best for you.

Allamah Ibn Abi Jumrah writes: "Istikhara will not be performed for things that are obligatory and mustahab (because it has to be done) and also about abandoning what is forbidden and makruh will not be recited because abandoning the Shar'a It is not necessary to do it), so Istikhara will be done only in permissible work, however, if there are two things that conflict with the mustahab work, which work should be started, then Istikhara can be done in that too. Istikhara will not be done about giving up what is forbidden or makruh, because it is obligatory to give it up according to the Shariah), Therefore, Istikhara will be done only in permissible work, however, if there are two conflicting things in the mustahab work as to which work should be started, then Istikhara can be done in that too. (Fath al-Bari, vol. 7, page. 434-433)

Hadith About Istikhara

Hadith No.1: Hazrat Anas bin Malik narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever seeks guidance from Allah Ta'ala in any matter before will never fail, and the one who sought advice (from a good advisor) will never be ashamed and he who has adopted a meek attitude (in his way of life), he will never be needy. (Al-Mu'jam al-Awsat: 6627)

Hadith No.2: Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to do something, he used to pray with these words: "O Allah! Make it good for me and make it dear to my heart" (Tirmidhi: 3516).

Imam al-Ghazali writes: "Whoever is given four things, he will not be deprived of four things: (1) He who is blessed with gratitude, he will not be deprived of any further blessing in it." , (2): the person, who is blessed with repentance, will not be deprived of acceptance, (3): who is blessed with Istikhara, he will not be deprived of obtaining good, (4): someone, who is being advised, will not be deprived of getting the right thing. (Ihya ul Uloom ud Deen, juzz 1, page 206)

Dua e Istakhara

Dua e Istakhara English translation

O Allah! Indeed, I ask You for good (in this work) with the help of Your knowledge and I ask You for power (to achieve good) through Your power And I ask You for Your great grace, indeed You are able to do everything and I am not able, You know the result of everything. And I do not know (anything) and You have the Knowledge of all the unseen. O Allah! If you know that this work (which I intend) is better for me, my religion, my life and my destiny, then decree it for me. And make it easy, then bless me in it, and if in Your knowledge this work is bad for me in terms of my religion, my life and the results, then turn away this (work) from me and me from it and grant me good wherever is good, then please me with it.
